Read the book!
Feed has been chosen as the 2009 All Henrico Reads title. “It’s insulting to believe that teens should have a different kind of book than an adult should,” says the author in the November 29, 2008 issue of The Washington Post. “Teens like challenges,” M.T. says, and “they can tell when a book is simplifying life.” And what a challenge his book Feed presents. It is certainly not simplifying life but reflecting it. Capturing our global dilemma of humans trying to process too much information in a fast-paced, digital world of fluid truth, M.T. creates a story where characters have a device called a “feed” implanted in their brains. This device allows them to have an instant messaging system driven by thought instead of typed words, and their every thought can be followed by targeted advertising.
SCARY? You bet. Thought provoking? Absolutely! But M.T.’s greatest appeal may come from his readers recognizing the technology truths inherent in his writing.
