Ask a Librarian

About the Service

How does the Ask a Librarian service work?

Type your question above, select whether you want a reply via text or email, and click Submit. Questions will be addressed by Henrico Library staff.

  • For Text responses, library staff members strive to respond within 10 minutes. However, your wait could be longer during busy times.
  • For Email responses, library staff members strive to respond within 24 working hours.

If a staff member is available for live chat regarding your question, you will also see an option to "Start a Live Chat." Just select the chat option and click Submit to start a chat session.

When is the service available?

The askHCPL service is monitored Monday through Thursday, 10am – 8pm; and Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Answers and live chat are only available during those hours—though you may submit a question at any time.

What kinds of questions can you answer?

askHCPL is designed to offer brief assistance for factual questions, and offer suggestions to other resources that might help you find the information you need.

Some examples of appropriate questions:

  • When was Henrico County established?
  • What is the third book in the Percy Jackson series?
  • When is the next library book sale?

If your question involves more extensive research assistance, we may ask you to call or visit your Henrico Library.

Is my text or chat session confidential?

Each text and chat session is a private conversation between you and the Library staff member. The information submitted to askHCPL is used for Library business only. Your identifying information will never be sold, distributed or used for commercial or marketing purposes. Transcripts from chat and text sessions may be used for training and statistical purposes, but we will never connect it to any of your personal information.
