Troubleshooting Remote Access

Library Card

Only current library card holders can access the online resources from outside the Library. To authenticate, your userid is your library card number. This can be found on a barcode on your library card and begins with 286. . . Enter all 14 digits without the spaces.

Refresh

Clicking the Refresh button on your browser might resolve the problem or using a different browser might work. If you are using Internet Explorer, try using Netscape or vice versa.

Error messages

One of the most common web page error messages is 404 Not Found. In some cases, this means that the server is down on the other end. Try again later.

Browser Support

Some of our online resource vendors do not support all browsers, specifically WebTV or the AOL browser. If your Internet connection is through AOL, you must use a supported browser, usually Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x.

Cookies - enabling

Cookies must be enabled on your browser to access online resources remotely. To enable cookies:

  • For Internet Explorer v. 6.0, click on Tools -- Internet Options -- Privacy. A setting of "medium" should allow access. For other versions of IE, consult the Help files.
  • For Netscape v. 7.1, click on Edit -- Preferences. Under the Privacy & Security category choose Cookies. A setting of "medium" should allow access. For other versions of Netscape, consult the Help files.
  • For Apple Safari, try reading this FAQ for tips.

Cookies - deleting

Sometimes, however, previous cookies become invalid for some reason. The URL for a online resource may have changed. In this case, you will need to delete your old cookies related to that online resource. To delete cookies:

  • For Internet Explorer v. 6.0, click on Tools -- Internet Options. Click Delete Cookies in the middle of the box. For other versions of IE, consult the Help files.
  • For Netscape v. 7.1, go to Edit -- Preferences. Under the Privacy & Security category choose Cookies. Choose Manage Stored Cookies and delete the appropriate cookies or click Remove All Cookies. For other versions of Netscape, consult the Help files.
  • For Apple Safari, try reading this FAQ for tips.

Firewalls

Some people also have firewall software, such as Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, or Symantec Desktop Firewall, on their personal computers that may be blocking referrer information to the online resources. You will need to consult your software manual and/or contact their technical support for help in setting your software so that you can access our online resources.

Vendor FAQs

Some of the vendors of the online resources provide guides for troubleshooting access issues:

Ebscohost -- Literary Reference Center and Novelist

eLibrary

Heritage Quest

Reference USA

Security

If you are trying to access the online resources from work, you might check with your network security. Some places of employment have their network configured in such a way, usually with firewalls or other security features, that access to our online resources is prevented.

Java and JavaScript

Java and JavaScript must be enabled to access some online resources. To enable these features:

  • For Internet Explorer v. 6.0, go to Tools -- Internet Options, click the Security tab, select the Internet zone and confirm that the 'Security level' is set to Medium. Consult the Help files for detailed instructions.
  • For Netscape v. 6.2, go to Edit -- Preferences -- Advanced. Click the boxes beside Enable Java and JavaScript. Consult the Help files for detailed instructions.
  • For Apple Safari, try reading this FAQ for tips.
