We've compiled a few of our most common OverDrive questions and answers all in one place. We hope they will help you solve some of the more common issues people have with OverDrive. OverDrive has a great help site with videos and step-by-step instructions for many aspects of their service. We hope that between this page and the OverDrive help site your question can be answered. How many eBooks/audiobooks can I have checked out at a time?

25 titles can be checked out at the same time. 

Can I renew an eBook/audiobook?

Yes. The option to renew a title becomes available three days before it is set to expire and appears next to the title on the Bookshelf in your Account.

How do I renew an eBook/audiobook?

  1. Sign in to OverDrive using your library card number.
  2. On your Bookshelf, select the Renew icon next to the title you’d like to renew.
    • If there are no holds on the title, the Renew icon will be green and you will be able to renew the title at the end of your current loan period.
    • If there are existing holds on the title, the Renew icon will be grayed out. You can use the renew feature to place a hold on the title.
  3. When your current loan period expires you will receive an email letting you know that you can borrow the title again.
    • You will have to re-download the title.

How do I place a hold?

  1. Click Place a Hold.
  2. If prompted, enter your information. Click Sign In.
  3. Enter your email address. Be sure to use a real address because it will be used to notify you when the title is available.
  4. Click Place a Hold.
  5. When the title is available, you'll receive an email. The email will include a link back to the library's OverDrive site as well as how much time you have to retrieve the title.
    • Holds expire in 72 hours.
  6. Log in to the library's OverDrive site. Then go to Account > Holds.
  7. Select the Borrow option to check out the title.

How do I change my email with OverDrive?

  1. Sign in to your account on the library's OverDrive site.
  2. Click the Holds option.
  3. Select the Edit link.
  4. Enter the new email address in both required fields.
  5. Click Submit.

I just got a new library card number and can't see the holds I placed using my old library card number. How can I fix this?

Please contact support. Be sure to include your new library card number, your old library card number, and your email address. We'll get it fixed.

How do I return an eBook?

Follow this link for device specific instructions by OverDrive.

After your titles are returned they will be removed from your current checkout list within minutes.

Can I recommend titles for the library to purchase?

Yes you can. You can recommend one book every 14 days.

  1. After you search for something on our OverDrive site you will see an option to view Additional Titles to Recommend in the search result filters.
  2. If you select Additional Titles to Recommend, titles that you can recommend to the library will be added to your search results. You can continue to sort and filter your results to find the title(s) you are looking for.
  3. To recommend a title, select the Recommend button.
  4. When you select Recommend, a pop-up will open where you can choose to be notified and/or be placed on the holds list if the title is purchased.
  5. Select Recommend this title to complete your recommendation. 

I get a "User not activated message" when I try to read books on my Nook. How do I fix it?

  1. With the Nook plugged into your computer go to Computer (or Finder on MAC).
  2. Click on the Nook drive.
  3. Find and delete the file .adobe-digital-editions (before deleting, place a copy on your desktop for backup).
  4. Safely eject and unplug the nook from the computer.
  5. Start Adobe Digital Editions.
  6. Plug the Nook to the computer.
  7. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  8. If not, Close Adobe Digital Editions.
  9. Go back to the Nook drive in Computer.
  10. Find and delete the Digital Editions file.
  11. Restart Adobe Digital Editions.
  12. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  13. Authorize the device.
  14. You should be able to transfer books.

Adobe Digital Editions doesn't see my Nook when I plug it in. How can I fix it?

There are two options: the easy way and the involved way.

The easy way:

  1. Connect your Nook to your computer.
  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
    • Hopefully the Nook will show up.
    • Authorize the Nook.
  3. You should be able to transfer books.

The involved way:

  1. With the Nook plugged into your computer go to Computer (or Finder on MAC)
  2. Click on the Nook drive.
  3. Find and delete the file .adobe-digital-editions (before deleting, place a copy on your desktop for backup).
  4. Safely eject and unplug the nook from the computer.
  5. Start Adobe Digital Editions.
  6. Plug the Nook to the computer.
  7. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  8. If not, Close Adobe Digital Editions.
  9. Go back to the Nook drive in Computer.
  10. Find and delete the Digital Editions file.
  11. Restart Adobe Digital Editions.
  12. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.

  14. You should be able to transfer books.

I checked out a Kindle book but it didn't download to my Kindle. What happened?

Make sure your Kindle is connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi network (not 3G) so that the books you check out from us are delivered to your Kindle quickly and easily. This link will help you connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi. Select your model and Amazon has a video tutorial with step-by-step directions.

  1. Log in to your Amazon account and navigate to Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. You will see a list of books you have purchased from Amazon and borrowed from the library.
  3. To the right of the list there is an Actions icon next to each book.
  4. When you place your cursor over that icon a list of options will appear.
  5. Select Deliver To My...
    • You should see a window pop up that gives you the chance to deliver the book to your Kindle.
    • After selecting this, the book should be delivered within minutes.

I have to download some Kindle books and transfer them using a USB cable. How do I do that?

To download a book immediately after checkout:

  1. Click Get for Kindle.
  2. You will be directed to amazon.com
    • You may be required to login to your amazon.com account if you are not already logged in.
  3. Choose your Kindle.
  4. The files should begin downloading within a few seconds.
  5. When the download is complete you should get a message giving you some options for what to do next.
    • Choose the option that lets you open the folder where the file is located.
      • The book will probably be downloaded to the Downloads folder.
  6. Click and drag the file to your Desktop or someplace where you can find it quickly.
  7. Plug in the USB Cable that came with your Kindle into both the Kindle and your Computer.
  8. Go to Computer.
    • Your Kindle should show up as a Storage Device.
  9. Open the Kindle Drive by double-clicking the icon.
    • There will be several folders.
  10. Open the Documents folder by double-clicking the icon.
  11. Click and drag the file(s) to the folder.
  12. Unplug your Kindle.
    • The book should be near the top of the list of books on your Kindle.

To download a book from 'Manage Your Content and Devices':

  1. Log in to your Amazon account and navigate to Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.
    • Your device will appear in the same location on your comuter that external USB drives appear.
      • Windows: Your device will appear in the Computer or My Computer folder.
      • Mac: Your device will appear on the desktop.
  3. Open the device folder, then open the Documents or Internal Documents folder. 
  4. Locate the downloaded file on your computer, and then drag and drop the compatible file into the appropriate folder. Depending on your device type, the folder names may vary.
    • For example, on Kindle Paperwhite, move books to the Documents folder. On Kindle Fire tablets, move books to the Books folder. 
  5. Safely disconnect your device from your computer once the transfer is complete. 

The book should be near the top of the list of books on your Kindle.

How do I delete a title from my Kindle after I've read it?

Kindle 2nd Generation

  1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.
  2. Underline the book you want to delete.
  3. Move the 5-way controller to the left.
  4. Select Delete.

Kindle Keyboard

  1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.
  2. Underline the item you want to remove with the 5-way controller.
  3. Move the controller to the left and select Remove from device.

Kindle

  1. If you are not already on the Home screen, press the Home button.
  2. Underline the item you want to remove with the 5-way controller.
  3. Move the controller to the left and select Remove from device.

Kindle Touch

  1. From the Home screen, press and hold the item.
  2. Select Move to Archived Items or other appropriate option (Delete this Issue, Delete Document).

Kindle Fire

If your Kindle Fire has the latest software version available, you can remove an item/title from your carousel by tapping and holding on the item, then selecting Remove from Carousel.

I have a Kindle Fire and am unable to search the OverDrive collection in the OverDrive app. What can I do?

  1. Open the Silk browser and enter www.henrico.overdrive.com in the address bar. 
  2. Search or browse the collection to find an eBook you'd like to read.
  3. Select 'Borrow' and sign in if prompted.
  4. Continue browsing or go to the Loans section of your account and select 'Choose a format' then 'EPUB eBook'.
  5. The first time you try this you should see a 'Device Compatibility Notice' select 'Confirm' then an 'Open with' option message will appear, select 'OverDrive' and be sure to select the box that tells the device to always use this option. 
  6. The OverDrive app should open to the Bookshelf and display the title.
