Homework Ask a Teen Librarian

Q:

"I am confused. I know that these database things are supposed to help me with my projects...but I don't even know where to start! Why can't I just use Google and Wikipedia? All this online stuff's the same anyway, right?"

A:

Well...Confused...it's like this.
Google and Wikipedia and most Internet sites are really great at what they do-which is to help you find stuff quickly and easily-and can be a great place to start your searching. But, they are free-and it is free, do you really want it? Maybe yes. Maybe no.

Learning your way around database searching can make your project (and your life!) easier. Yes, easier than scrolling through thousands of Google hits and wondering what might be a "good" source.

Websites, Search Engines, Databases...what’s the diff?

Websites—the place someone builds on the web to hold some stuff….any stuff, like info, pics, music, video, etc.

Search engines—like Google, they help you find sites on the web or items on a site.

Databases—lots of info put together and organized by a company that uses their own searching tools—libraries pay for these and make them available to their members for free. Our library databases cost about a half million dollars and you can search for free with your library card.
