2017 Elementary School Trophy Challenge

The annual Elementary School Trophy Challenge is back!

What is the Trophy Challenge?

It is a contest between all Henrico County's Elementary schools. The schools with the highest percentage of students who meet the Summer Reading Club's reading goal get a big shiny trophy with a brass plate engraved with their school's name to display during the school year.

How does it work?

  1. Henrico County Public School elementary students sign up for the Summer Reading Club.
  2. They log the number of days they read throughout the summer.
  3. The school with the highest percentage of finishers (having read at least 20 days) will receive a trophy to keep on display for one year.

We will track progress during the summer and share this with the club participants through email and other methods.  We hope that with this added incentive, we can encourage even more students to participate and finish the summer reading club, and experience the joy of reading as a lifelong pursuit.

In addition to the trophies, each winning school will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card valued at $50 for the school library.

With 2016 drawing to a close, we asked our children's library staff to share their favorite books of the year. The response we got was phenomenal. Our library staff love to read nearly as much as they love helping families find the perfect book!

Sharing is also a favorite activity of ours, so here is every single title that made us do the happy dance this year, starting with the books that received multiple recommendations:

School is in full swing and assignments are rolling in. Whether the project is due tomorrow or you've got plenty of time we've got you covered.

We'd like to introduce you to two of our premium resources that will help you and your student when doing research for papers and projects.

b2ap3_thumbnail_world-book-logo.jpgThe first is one you've probably heard of, The World Book Encyclopedia. The online version provides the same level of coverage you will find in print plus lots more. You will find three different encyclopedias: Early World of Learning for preschool learners, Kids for early elementary students and Student for everyone else. There are also some extras! Timelines that introduce important dates/people in a wide range of studies and Discover which separates subjects into topics for a more browsable experience. They even have a Spanish version, Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazogs

No matter which option you choose, there will be great information. Maps, illustrations, videos and more! Let The World Book Encyclopedia be one of the first places you visit when starting a report or project.

b2ap3_thumbnail_eLibrary_icon.gifThe second resource you will want to investigate is eLibrary. It offers a wide range of materials that will help with any research project. Full-text newspapers and magazines from around the world, transcripts from television and radio programs, reference books, maps, pictures and even audio/video recordings. It even has a Topics section where a wide-ranging set of resources has been grouped by specific topics. This is just the beginning of what you can find at eLibrary! It's practically one-stop-shopping for research papers.
