2018 Elementary Trophy Challenge

The annual Elementary School Trophy Challenge is back!

What is the Trophy Challenge?

It is a contest between all Henrico County Public School elementary schools. The schools with the highest percentage of students who meet the Summer Reading Club's reading goal get a big shiny trophy with a brass plate engraved with their school's name to display during the school year.

How does it work?

  1. Henrico County Public School elementary students sign up for the Summer Reading Club.
  2. They log the number of days they read throughout the summer.
  3. The school with the highest percentage of finishers (having read at least 20 days) will receive a trophy to keep on display for one year.

We will track progress during the summer and share this with the club participants through email and other methods.  We hope that with this added incentive, we can encourage even more students to participate and finish the summer reading club, and experience the joy of reading as a lifelong pursuit.

In addition to the trophies, each winning school will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card valued at $50 for the school library.

Check back often to see how your school is doing!

Registration updates will take place on June 15 and June 29.
Progress updates will take place weekly, every Friday between July 6 and August 24.
The final announcement of the Trophy Challenge winners will take place on Tuesday September 4!

b2ap3_thumbnail_Police---Motorcyle-on-the-Go.jpgView a motorcycle close up at North Park Library with Police's Josh Wharton while enjoying a cool treat courtesy of the Friends of the Library! We're meeting on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 3-4pm for the fun.

Remember, Reading Club ends on Monday - so add this event to your online log, along with those final books read to earn your prizes!

By the way, did you know that motorcycle policemen have a history of being heroic?  In fact, the Make-a-Wish Foundation was co-founded by an Arizona motorcycle policeman by the name of Frank Shankwitz. It all started when Officer Frank helped a seven year old boy named Chris become an honorary policeman and earn his motorcycle officer's wings.  That was over 30 years ago and since then thousands of wishes have been granted - and - it all started with the generosity of a few creative public servants - and one motorcycle policeman.

And where did I learn this fact? Check out Heroes for My Son, or the accompanying Heroes for My Daughter, each by Brad Meltzer.

The fourth annual Elementary School Trophy Challenge is back!

What is the Trophy Challenge?

Trophy

It is a contest between all Henrico County's Elementary schools. The schools with the highest percentage of students who meet the Summer Reading Club's reading goal get a big shiny trophy with a brass plate engraved with their school's name to display during the school year.

How does it work?

  1. Henrico County Public School elementary students sign up for the Summer Reading Club.
  2. They log the books/hours they read throughout the summer.
  3. The school with the highest percentage of finishers (having read at least 10 books, or for 10 hours) will receive a trophy to keep on display for one year.

We will track progress during the summer and share this with the club participants through email and other methods.  We hope that with this added incentive, we can encourage even more students to participate and finish the summer reading club, and experience the joy of reading as a lifelong pursuit.

Schools By Region

We've added another region to the challenge this year. Schools are now grouped into four regions — East, NorthNear West and Far West — and four trophies will be awarded.  In addition to the trophies, each winning school will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card valued at $50 for the school library.

Let the Summer Reading Fun Begin!

We're celebrating super heroes, animal heroes and local heroes at your libraries this summer. The reading programs range from preschoolers through adults. Sign up online with your library card  June 1st to August 31st.  Keep track of the books you read (or have read to you) during that period to earn prizes.  Visit your libraries for fun programs like Bill Wellington, and visits by Henrico County firefighter and police heroes.

There will be raffles at summer's end for those who finish the program and each branch will host a "Cool Treat" finale.

Home PriceRobert McCloskey was an award-winning author and illustrator born on September 15, 1914. He wrote eight books including Blueberries for Sal (1948) and One Morning in Maine (1952), runners-up for the Caldecott award, as well as Make Way for Ducklings (1941) and Time of Wonder (1957), which both won the Caldecott award. Aside from his own books, McCloskey also illustrated ten other stories. McCloskey was named a living legend by the Library of Congress in 2000 and Make Way for Ducklings was named the official children’s book of Massachusetts in 2003.

In order to celebrate Robert McCloskey on what would have been his 100th birthday, all Henrico County Public Libraries will be encouraging young readers to visit their local library and share their favorite book of the summer. Those who share will have the opportunity to win a copy of Make Way for Ducklings or Homer Price! Entries will be accepted until the end of September.

Scientists, Even Better Than Magicians!

Kids and parents alike had a great time with Mad Science and their "Spin, Pop, Boom" show at North Park.  Atomic Ali revealed, "Magicians don't reveal secrets - mad scientists do  - and they explain WHY!"  Families learned about disappearing ink, centripetal force, and atoms, which are like "the tiniest Legos in the world that together make molecules."  Thank you Friends of North Park Library for sponsoring another exciting event.

Research indicates that reading just 5 books over the summer will keep your child from experiencing summer reading loss - a slide in reading achievement - and having to start school 2 or 3 months back in skill level from when school ended for summer vacation. As a parent, your support and involvement are an important part of your child's summer reading success. Here are a few ideas that can help make summer reading a fun and positive experience for your child:

  • Help your child set a realistic goal for number of books read.
  • Set a time for reading, even if only for a few minutes a day. Have the whole family sit down and read during this time. You can also use this time for reading aloud.
  • Share stories with your children, and ask them to share their favorite stories with you.
  • Talk about books together.
  • Let your child select his or her own books, even the ones that may look "too easy."  Like adults, children sometimes want to read books that are fun and effortless.
  • Come to the library often to get new books to read, and dont' forget to join Fizz, Boom, READ this summer!

Reading about science isn't always that exciting.

Watching science?

Much more fun.

With that in mind, we've created a five-part video series called "Science Shorts." Every other Wednesday throughout the summer, we'll post a short science video, demonstrating different science concepts and showing you how to recreate these demonstrations at home.

Enjoy!
