Greeking Out: A Celebration of All Things Greece

A grid of eight book cover images (five on the top row, three on the bottom) overlays a landscape photo taken on a Greek island. The viewer looks out over white and blue buildings, the ocean, and a sun setting behind hills in the distance.

The Winter Olympics are upon us, and we’re highlighting the country where it all began over two thousand years ago: Greece! Often referred to as “the cradle of Western civilization,” Greece is located in Southern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula and is known for being a premiere vacation destination with amazing food, famous historical sites, and rich culture. So, in honor of the country that brought us the Olympics (as well as the alphabet, democracy, and gyros…), here is a list of fiction and non-fiction reads related to all things Greece. Opa!

Serving Seniors, Strengthening Community

Two older adult women smile at the camera while holding up paint brushes and small gardening pots with painted designs. The woman standing on the left wears a colorful printed shirt with sea creatures, and the woman sitting on the right wears a shirt with a colorful floral pattern.

Greatest Generation, Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, Generation Alpha: no matter what age demographic you are in, there’s a trend that affects us all. We are all getting older. Not just individually, but as a society.

The World Health Organization reports that every country in the world is seeing growth in the number and proportion of older persons in the population. This is happening on a local level, too. In Virginia, the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service reports that 1 in 5 Virginians will be over 65 years by 2030.

The fact that people are living longer is positive news, but with it, comes a need to be prepared.

All Aboard! Sail Away to Another World

Eight book cover images overlay a background photograph of a large cruise ship docked next to a tropical beach with bright blue waters.

Ships have long been an object of cultural fascination, due to both their massive size and their potential for massive problems (onboard and overboard!). Both cruise ships and swashbuckling pirate ships have frequently captured the American imagination. Once a luxury enjoyed by the upper classes, cruise ships are a vacation enjoyed by many today. Pirate ships are a popular trope of modern storytelling, with plenty of historical information to inspire authors and readers alike.

Feeling the call of the sea? From romance to murder, these titles offer readers a chance to sail away to another world.
