Award-winning picture book authors Hanh Bui and Chiêu Anh Urban will be at the Tuckahoe Library on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event is free and all ages are welcome. Read on to learn more.
This program offers a chance to explore Vietnamese culture as the authors read and talk about their books from 10 a.m.-noon. Then, members of VCU's Vietnamese Student Association will perform the Vietnamese Fan Dance (Múa Quạt). Crafts and activities for children will follow from noon-2 p.m. The Tuckahoe Library is located at 1901 Starling Drive, Henrico, VA 23229.
Bui’s colorful and joyous picture books The Yellow Áo Dài and Ánh's New Word look at the refugee experience through the eyes of a child. The books are influenced by her own life coming to the United States from Vietnam when she was eight years old. Bui will be joined by Chiêu Anh Urban, an award-winning author/illustrator, who was also forced to flee Vietnam with her family in 1975.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and is one of many programs connected with the Summer Reading Challenge. This program is also a continuation into June of the library’s recognition of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
