Calling All Young Creators!

A grid of six children's books about different artists overlays a close-up photograph of a child drip painting in bright colors on a canvas.

Calling all young creators! The library offers its youngest patrons multiple outlets for their creative endeavors. One of our newest art series for kids is the Young Art Explorers Club at Tuckahoe Library. This program is designed to introduce children, grades 3-5, to the fascinating world of art through fun, hands-on projects inspired by stories of famous artists from around the world. Read on to learn more about this new offering and other regular children’s art programs at the library.

Every Young Art Explorers workshop includes a short storytime or presentation about the featured artist, a discussion of their work, and an exciting art activity based on their unique style. At the end of the year, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their creations in a special gallery exhibit at the library!

Open-ended art projects encourage creativity, boost confidence, and help children build an appreciation for different artistic techniques and cultural perspectives. All supplies are provided by the library, and no prior art experience is needed—just curiosity and imagination.

Here’s a peek at some of the inspiring artists we’ll be exploring this season:

Jackson Pollock

Known for his unique "drip painting" technique, American artist Jackson Pollock revolutionized abstract art in the 20th century. Instead of using a brush, he poured, dripped, and splattered paint onto large canvases spread on the floor. Kids will love the freedom of creating energetic, abstract works using spinning tops and marbles.

Edgar Degas

A French painter and sculptor, Edgar Degas is best known for his graceful depictions of ballet dancers. He captured movement like no one else, using soft pastels and delicate lines. Kids will learn how to use chalk and oil pastels.

Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois was a French-American artist celebrated for her thought-provoking sculptures and installations. One of her most famous pieces is a giant spider named Maman, symbolizing protection and strength. Her work explores emotions and memory, giving kids a chance to experiment with storytelling through sculpture and mixed media.

Pablo Picasso

One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso co-founded the Cubist movement and had an incredibly diverse career. From colorful portraits to abstract shapes, his art always pushed boundaries. In this session, children will explore different ways to see and draw faces—just like Spanish artist Picasso!

Georgia O’Keeffe

Often called the “Mother of American Modernism,” Georgia O’Keeffe is famous for her large, close-up paintings of flowers, desert landscapes, and bones. Her bold colors and simple shapes make her work instantly recognizable. Children will use watercolors to explore the beauty of nature and learn how to turn ordinary objects into extraordinary art.
